The Barkan Family acquired the RiversEdge shopping Center in 1983, and has held controlling interest since then. I.J. Barkan, Inc. has overseen several major expansions and repositionings, culminating in its present dual anchored status, Market Basket and Building 19. It is a very successful local and regional retail development.
The City of Haverhill has encouraged the ownership of the center and the anchor stores to consider a mixed use project which takes advantage of the potential recreational and residential uses related to the long and attractive Merrimack River frontage associated with the property. This is an on-going process, which may yet lead to another and exiting stage in the property’s history.
In 2006 the Barkans formed a new joint venture ownership structure for this property with one of the largest retail property owners in the world, Kimco Realty, a NYSE REIT.
The I.J. Barkan, Inc. office is located at the strategic interchange of the Mad River Valley’s key roads, the corner of Route 17 and Route 100 in Waitsfield, Vermont.
The Barkan family has acquired in stages over the last 3 years approximately 20 acres of commercial and residential land at this intersection. A portion of the land is co-owned with Brothers Building Company, the area’s most prominent custom home builders and a major commercial property landlord in Waitsfield. Brothers Building Company owns the contiguous 75 acres, which combines with the Barkan family to control essentially all of the commercial property in the Irasville section on the West side of Route 100.
I.J. Barkan, Inc. and Brothers Building Company are engaged in long term planning for the eventual upgrade and growth in Irasville, which has been identified as the regional commercial center that the community wants to establish. The colored map below identifies the areas owned by I.J. Barkan, Inc., Brothers Building Co., and the combination of both.
With its joint venture partner Brothers Building Company (BBC), I.J. Barkan, Inc. is currently developing 8 speculative homes at a strategic corner of Route 100 and Lincoln Gap Road in the historic and picturesque town of Warren, VT. These homes will be underway in the Spring of 2007 and designed to meet a growth in the Mad River Valley for both year round and vacation ownership. The development intends to stand out in its use of energy efficient design criteria for the homeowner.
In Shrewsbury, Mass. at a major intersection strategically located on Route 9 near Lake Quinsigamond, I.J. Barkan, Inc., and Kimco Realty recently put a major development site under joint venture agreement. . . . DETAILS TO COME!
