Charity Hospital Building (“Charity”), is now commencing with building renovations and lease up. Charity was a teaching hospital for both Tulane and LSU medical schools and served the indigent population of New Orleans from 1939 to 2005. Following Hurricane Katrina, Charity was shuttered, and it has been replaced by a new $2 billion medical center constructed three blocks away on Tulane Avenue. The new medical center includes the University Medical Center Hospital (a teaching hospital), as well as a new VA Hospital.

Now the former Charity will be brought back to life as a vibrant center of commerce, providing opportunities to “live, eat and learn” in a beautiful historic structure, renovated into a state-of-the-art mixed-use development. This development was inspired by redevelopment projects like Crosstown Concourse in Memphis, TN, as well as Avalon in Atlanta, GA and Atherton Mill and Market in Charlotte, NC.

From Healing to Thriving A New Chapter Begins

The Charity mixed-use development will include over 336,000 square feet of offices, research labs and teaching space for Tulane University Medical School. The project will also include 302 apartment units, a New Harmony Charter High School, a 238-space parking garage and over 55,000 square feet of retail space. These uses will bring approximately 2,500 people per day, living and working in the development. It will also attract numerous visitors from the adjacent University Medical Center, as well as the New Orleans Central Business District. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
